Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Dancing with the Stars: Athletes’ winner prediction could very well come true

Another season, another “Dancing with the Stars” prediction from Jimmy Kimmel. On Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, the host continued his tradition of picking the winner sight unseen (his show taped before “Dancing” premiered), and this one may just wind up shuffling away with the Mirrorball trophy.

Kimmel picked Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman, who wowed the crowd with his energetic cha-cha to close Monday’s season premiere. He and Sharna Burgess earned a 24, tying Adam Rippon and Jenna Johnson for the highest score of the night, and moved safely into the second week. Norman also interrupted the stranglehold figure skaters had on the top three, with Mirai Nagasu and Alan Bersten, and Tonya Harding and Sasha Farber each getting a 23.

Just the mere fact that Norman is a football player meant he was not to be underestimated, but this is not any normal season. “This is year is probably the toughest year yet because every dance is an athlete, so I really had to do my homework,” Kimmel said. He has correctly predicted 10 of the last 20 winners — “it’s one of my greatest slash saddest accomplishments” — including former New York Giant Rashad Jennings in Season 24. He maintained the sports trend last season with a bold Derek Fisher pick, but the former Los Angeles Laker was the third person eliminated.

C’mon, Jimmy, don’t you know basketball players haven’t done well on the show? Guess he learned from that and is re-dipping into “Dancing”’s favorite sport again.

“Good luck,” Kimmel told Norman. “And remember: You might not care, but I have a lot of money riding on this.”

Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
