Singer/pianist Joseph O’Brien returned to “America’s Got Talent” 2018 this week to perform live from the Dolby Theatre in the Quarterfinals 3 episode. This time around the never-been-kissed singer took on an original song, “We Could Build A House,” that he wrote for a girl back home that he had a crush on. While the “AGT” judges — Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel — were supportive, was it enough to send him through to the Semifinals? Watch the “Americas Got Talent” performance video above, read the judges’ comments below, and make your predictions for which seven acts will advance to the Semifinals.
Mel: “So this was your original song. You wrote this song yourself. Are you together [with the girl]? Hopefully Briana hears this song because the lyrics were flawless. I was actually tearing up a little bit. I don’t know what’s going on tonight. It’s very good.”
Heidi: “It was sweet. I mean, it didn’t knock me out of my seat. But it was sweet.”
Simon: “Joseph, I like you. You’re probably gonna hook up now with Briana, so that’s the good news. The not so good news is I personally didn’t love the song. Now maybe it’s one of those songs you’ve gotta hear two or three times. You’ve stuck to what you want to do and I applaud you for that, but I’m not sure that performance is gonna get you through.”
Howie: “I’m agreeing with Simon. It’s about the dynamics. And this show from the beginning has been through the roof and just the dynamic of this … So hopefully it works for Briana.”
In his “AGT” live blog our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Twenty year old Joseph O’Brien took up the piano tonight with an original song about a girl that he has a crush on back home who Mel and Tyra encouraged him to name (he did!). Again, Heidi found it to be ‘sweet,’ like she did with Us the Duo, but it was much more apparent this time that she wasn’t fully on board with it. Simon and Howie both agreed with Heidi, expressing their concern that it might not have been strong enough for him to get the votes to go through.”
