“It’s all very well getting it up, but it’s the dismount that’s hard,” said “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” judge Bruno Tonioli about Josh Norman‘s contemporary dance during the semifinals. And for once the double entendre — there might have even been a triple entendre in there — seemed genuinely unintentional. Tonioli was referring to the acrobatic lifts executed by Norman and his pro partner Sharna Burgess. Their emotional and athletic routine received 9s from all four judges, which helped Norman secure a spot in the “DWTS” finals on May 21 alongside Adam Rippon and Tonya Harding. Watch it above.
The six semifinalists performed routines inspired by the MVPs in their lives, and Noman picked his siblings. “Growing up with four brothers was pretty much survival of the fittest. You had to fight your way to the top,” said Norman about the intense family dynamic. “It definitely was like a wolf pack.” His mother Sandra described it as “chaos” but also as “brotherly love.”
That combination of affection and competition certainly prepared him well for “DWTS.” See what the judges had to say about his performance below, and vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know if you think Norman deserves to become the fifth NFL player to win the Mirror Ball Trophy.
Len Goodman: “I was concerned. After Adam’s contemporary I thought, uh-oh. But I thought it was different from his, but there was a beautiful fluidity about the whole dance. The lifts were seamless … I liked it so much, well done.”
Bruno Tonioli: “Strong, assured, confident — but what you did is you took such great care of Sharna. It was loving, and it was reassuring. And impressive lifts — it’s all very well getting it up, but it’s the dismount that’s hard. Usually what happens is that you lose the flow of the dance, but you never did. It all was extremely musical. Well done.”
Carrie Ann Inaba: “I absolutely agree with everything Len said. There was a surefootedness about you that made me have peace watching it. You instilled a sense of peace because you were so confident. And you did every movement with such love and care for Sharna. Every lift was impeccable. I’ve never seen that life done before executed that way. You were on fire. You were in the zone.”
David Ross: “One word: smooth. That was as smooth as you could ask for. It was beautiful. I know how hard those lifts are. I almost dropped Lindsay a couple of times. But that was smooth and elegant. Nice job.”
