When Katy Perry removed her earrings, all bets were off. The superstar “American Idol” judge was not happy that drag queen Ada Vox failed to earn America’s vote on Monday’s results show, so she took it upon herself to make things right. “I think we do know talent when we see it,” said a defiant Katy as her co-judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie nodded in approval. “So I would say, we would like to make an executive decision right now. Ada? You get that seat, baby,” Katy declared, referring to one of the open chairs in the Top 10. Watch the viral moment above.
Based on America’s votes, the six singers who made it through automatically to the Top 10 of “American Idol” Season 16 were Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner, Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Michael J. Woodard and Catie Turner. Since the judges automatically pushed through Ada, that meant they had to choose three additional singers to round out the Top 10.
After an agonizing commercial break, Katy, Luke and Lionel announced that they were saving Jurnee, Michelle Sussett and Dennis Lorenzo. Thus, the four singers from the talented Top 14 that ended up being robbed of a place in the finals were Marcio Donaldson, Garrett Jacobs, Jonny Brenns and Mara Justine. “I don’t know everything. I’ve got a lot to learn,” Katy told Ada after dramatically removing her earrings. “But I have worked my butt off for over 10 years in the spotlight. And these gentlemen on my side, all of us collectively together [have worked] maybe 60. I think we do know talent when we see it.” The audience began cheering before Katy was even done speaking, as excited tears streamed down Ada’s face.
Ada chose “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from “Dreamgirls” as her “save me” song during Monday’s results episode. It’s just one of a long line of big songs that Ada has performed on “American Idol,” along with “The Show Must Go On,” “Defying Gravity,” “Feeling Good” and “House of the Rising Sun.” Back in Season 12 Ada auditioned as a boy named Adam Sanders, but now she’s embracing her true self as a drag queen.
