“American Idol” contestant Catie Turner may have been eliminated in sixth place (tying Jurnee), but she went out with a bang in the grand finale of Season 16. This 17-year-old from Langhorne, Pennsylvania brought the house down with judge Katy Perry during the two-hour episode for an intimate, stripped-down performance of “Part of Me.” Perry had previously told Turner that she wanted to sing with her and on Monday’s show she made good on her word, even letting Turner pick the song. Watch the “American Idol” performance video above.
Even though Turner was voted out of ABC’s reality TV show two weeks ago, the fan favorite returned to the stage twice this week. Besides her duet with Perry, Turner also popped up during Sunday’s performance episode to sing “21st Century Machine” as part of a medley of original songs from eliminated artists. “21st Century Machine” went viral after Turner’s initial audition, so it only made sense to bring her back to perform it live.
In his “American Idol” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson noted, “Coach Katy Perry is making good on a promise to perform with one of the season’s most memorable contestants, Catie Turner. Turner chose ‘Part of Me’ from Perry’s song catalog. Most viewers probably expected this personality-filled duo to perform a high-energy dance tune filled with humor. In contrast, the pair gave us a stripped-down emotional performance about holding on to confidence.”
The winner of “American Idol” 2018 was 20-year-old Maddie Poppe from Clarksville, Iowa. She became the sixth woman to win in the show’s history, joining the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. (See the “American Idol” winners list down below.) Caleb Lee Hutchinson was named the season’s runner-up, while Gabby Barrett came in third place. Read our live blog recap to see how it all went down Monday night.
