Kelly Clarkson, what were you thinking?! Monday night during Night 7 of “The Voice” Season 15, Kelly pitted SandyRedd against Cody Ray Raymond in a battle to the song “Cry to Me” by Solomon Burke. While both artists excelled in their performances, SandyRedd is clearly one of the frontrunners of the season, which is why we’re so shocked that Kelly made the unforgivable mistake of kicking her off of her team. Watch NBC’s “The Voice” battle round video above and read the coaches’ comments below.
“This is stressful! I need food!” Kelly shouted before announcing her controversial decision. “Cody Ray, it’s literally like Chris Stapleton. It’s so smooth. It’s gorgeous. SandyRedd, you’re literally one of the best singers I’ve ever heard in my life. I mean, in the blinds I was hiding behind the chair for a solid reason. Your voice is like, what? It’s insane what you do. The winner of this battle is Cody Ray.”
But SandyRedd’s journey was far from over. All three of the other coaches — Adam Levine, Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton — pushed their “steal” buttons to save the Chicago native from elimination. After a fierce deliberation between them, SandyRedd said, “I gotta take it home. I’m going with Jennifer.” Perhaps she was swayed by Jennifer’s pitch in which she asked SandyRedd what she wanted from a coach, as opposed to telling her how great she was.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the battle: “In the battle, the chemistry between SandyRedd and Cody Ray on stage was fire. Cody Ray opened the song with a smooth vocal with his guitar while SandyRedd rounded him out with her raspy, soulful voice. For what it’s worth, SandyRedd proved herself to be the all-around performer we already knew her to be, but Cody Ray really stepped it up against one of the strongest artists of the season. In their critiques, the other coaches were already promising to use their steals on the artist that Kelly did not choose.”
