Monday night during the premiere episode of NBC’s “The Voice,” 13-year-old singer Kennedy Holmes received the first four-chair turn of Season 15. Jennifer Hudson, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine were all impressed with Kennedy’s performance of Adele‘s “Turning Tables,” but Jennifer had the advantage because Kennedy was a superfan of hers. In fact, before Kennedy made her decision Jennifer even joined the talented tyke on stage for an impromptu performance of “I Am Changing.” Watch “The Voice” blind audition video above and read Jennifer’s comments below.
“You are a gem and I understand just how special and precious it is,” Jennifer told her after their duet. “And if I could instill every inch of whatever I could possibly give you, I will do that. I will be that coach that’s there for you no matter what.” After Kennedy chose to be on Team Jennifer, Jennifer proudly bragged, “I think the game is over, because I just won ‘The Voice’ with little Miss Kennedy.”
While trying to woo Kennedy to his team, Adam noted, “Very, very rarely does someone come around that kind of reignites our passion for what we do, and to hear you sing today did that. Just to see that kind of confidence naturally exist in you at such a young age, it’s unheard of. After 15 seasons, you really could become the absolute biggest thing to ever come from this show.”
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “The coaches acknowledged her range, tone and control in referencing how seasoned she sounds. When Jennifer began to speak, Kennedy started crying and admitted that she’s dreamed of singing with her. With that, Jennifer took a mic and got on stage with Kennedy for an impromptu duet of “I Am Changing,” bringing Kelly to tears and painting huge smiles across the faces of Adam and Blake. Honestly I would have thrown my computer across the room if there had been any result other than… Kennedy joining Team Jennifer! Watch out–Jennifer has the frontrunner of the season. Game over!”
