Sunday night during the Top 3 performance episode of “American Idol,” 20-year-old Maddie Poppe sang her brand new single “Going Going Gone” and earned praises from judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Clarksville, Iowa resident later took on “Don’t Ever Let Your Children Grow Up” and “Landslide” during the Season 16 finale performance show. Do YOU think that Maddie will join the winner’s list for “American Idol” 2018? Watch the “Going Going Gone” video above and then read the judges’ comments below.
Luke Bryan: “So Maddie, in my opinion you felt the most comfortable that we’ve seen out here thus far. Good job on that. I could relax watching you, so finally I can relax a little bit and take a breath. Way to come out here and deliver a solid performance. We know you guys are just kind of getting your grip on these new songs that have entered into your life, so you did a great job on that one.”
Lionel Richie: “Maddie, you know, some of these songs that you all have been covering, that’s two years, 20 years, 30 years worth of songs. And to feel comfortable with a song for two weeks, that’s pretty hardcore. But you’re in the sales business now, I want you to understand this. You’re in the salesmanship business and I think you did a fabulous job. I agree with Luke: most comfortable so far, I will say that.”
Katy Perry: “I back up these gentlemen. I also do think that ‘American Idol’ in a sense is like a bubble. And what we’re trying prepare you for is for you to continue to bring your A game outside in the big leagues. The big leagues is a real business and I think you have a real chance. I really want you to more than survive, I want you to thrive. So we’re gonna keep pushing you because I think that song is one of the better songs of the three that guys you all have. I think you’re a real star, but once you leave the nest of ‘American Idol’ it’s gonna be up to you to get that wingspan, girl.”
In his “American Idol” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson declared, “Of the three singles thus far, this is the best. It has a clear hook and is the most radio-ready. Maddie is relaxed on stage and although I’m not blown away by this song, it’s the best of the three.”
