The cat is out of the bag! After keeping their relationship private for weeks, “American Idol” finalists Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson announced that they’re dating during ABC’s grand finale on May 21, 2018. As both sets of parents looked on, Maddie (20 years old) and Caleb (18 years old) sang a duet of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World” moments before Maddie was named the winner of Season 16. “We and the country have fallen in love with the two of you,” host Ryan Seacrest said while introducing Maddie and Caleb’s duet. “I know the song that’s coming up and I’m just wondering, is there a special significance to the song?”
“Maddie’s like my best pal and I’ve known her since the beginning of Hollywood Week,” Caleb awkwardly responded before making the big announcement on live television. “You know, she, uh, she actually happens to be my girlfriend.”
As the audience erupted in shock and surprise, the three judges — Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan — jumped up from their seats. Katy then started spinning around in her chair in wild excitement. After everyone died down, Ryan reminded Maddie and Caleb that they’re “a couple and they’re competing for the title.”
At the end of the Season 16 finale, Maddie Poppe joined the “American Idol” winners list while Caleb Lee Hutchinson came in second place. Earlier during the two-hour results show Gabby Barrett was eliminated in third place. Ironically, Gabby also was in a relationship with a finalist this season, dating fourth-place finisher Cade Foehner.
