Well, this “Superbad” sequel looks weird. Oh, what? It’s not a sequel? OK, but it’s still weird. Netflix dropped the first teaser for Emma Stone and Jonah Hill‘s upcoming limited series “Maniac” on Sunday, and it’s a color-coded trip.
The clip features Stone and Hill, reuniting for the first time since “Superbad,” sitting across from each other at table engaged in what can only be described as an intense staring contest while an unsettling voiceover muses about how the mind can be solved. An array of bright colors then flood the screen, giving off major “Legion” vibes. So yeah, not much info, but still curiosity-piqueing.
Based on the Norwegian show of the same name, the dark comedy comes from Emmy winner Cary Joji Fukanaga (“True Detective”), who directed all 10 episodes. Stone and Hill play Annie and Owen, respectively, two strangers in a pharmaceutical trial that promises to fix their minds with a radical new pill. Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux) invented said pill and is running the three-day trial. Things don’t go as planned because when do they ever? Sally Field also co-stars.
“Maniac” marks Stone’s first major TV after previously co-starring on the short-lived Fox series “Drive” in 2007. Hill previously starred on Oxygen’s “Campus Ladies,” and created and voiced the title character for the animated series “Allen Gregory.” You can probably book both of them for Emmy nominations next year. That means we could get the Emma Stone vs. Amy Adams (“Sharp Objects”) contest we didn’t get at the Oscars last year.
“Maniac” will be released Friday, Sept. 21 on Netflix.
