Sunday night during the Top 14 performance episode of “American Idol,” 28-year-old Marcio Donaldson sang Barry Manilow‘s “It’s a Miracle” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Compton, California resident made America cry with his backstory of adopting his sister’s baby, and his voice definitely lives up the hype. Was Marcio’s performance good enough to send him through to the Top 10 of Season 16? Watch the “American Idol” video above and then read the judges’ comments below.
“Listen to me, ladies and gentlemen. That was old school!” Lionel raved as he gave a standing ovation. “The thing I want you to know is your confidence has gotten to the point now where you’re about to get out of control. So listen, all I want you to understand is keep developing, keep growing, put that confidence to your audience. You’re on fire, my friend. I’m very happy for you.”
“I thought that was really good,” added Katy. “I thought that was really joyful. I thought definitely you’ve arrived. Can you believe that you’re inspiring so many people back home? You’re an actual inspiration. But one bit of advice is that, as you go out there and you talk to the other contestants, tell them to stop thinking about what the results are and just sing.”
“Marcio, man, we’ve watched you deliver really tender moments in this old school style,” declared Luke. “I wasn’t all the way sold on the song just then as Lionel was, and that’s great. I’m used to you doing another style, so good job on showing us a whole other element.”
In his “American Idol” live blog recap, Denton Davidson said, “He may have shocked some people when he chose ‘It’s a Miracle’ by Barry Manilow for his song choice. Sadness looks like the furthest thing from Marcio’s mind as he is all smiles in a suave burgundy suit. I would love to know how he decided on this song, but he’s working the stage in a thoroughly entertaining way. I feel transported into 1960’s Motown and I’m digging it!”
