Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”) is the favorite to win her third straight Emmy for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, but she needs to watch out for another former champ gunning for her third statuette: Megan Mullally.
The “Will & Grace” star is in second place in our combined odds and is the pick of two of our Experts, Mathew Jacobs (Huffington Post) and Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes). Mullally was nominated seven times during “Will & Grace”’s original eight-year run, triumphing in 2000 and 2006. She is the only one of the show’s main quartet to win more than one Emmy.
The revival gave Mullally some great material, specifically killing off Karen’s longtime put-upon maid Rosario (Shelley Morrison). Mullally delivered a moving, funny eulogy for Rosie and if tapes still mattered, that would’ve been more than enough to clinch it.
A third win would tie Mullally with Valerie Harper (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) and Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”), both of whom won their Emmys consecutively. Metcalf is contention again for the “Roseanne” revival and has dropped to fourth place since the show’s abrupt cancellation following Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet.
Even if Mullally doesn’t prevail this year, she’ll still have two more shots to do so since “Will & Grace” has been renewed for two more seasons.
