“I really felt that it had the potential to be so current and modern,” reveals Melora Hardin about what first drew her to “The Bold Type.” This Freeform series revolves around a women’s magazine that tackles a variety of issues including politics, sexuality, religion, and self-expression. Hardin plays Jacqueline Carlyle, the tough-as-nails editor-in-chief who serves as a mentor to three young reporters (Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy), and the actress believes the show excels at the “kind of balanced conversation that we would really like our political leaders to be having right now.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hardin above.
Hardin was instantly drawn to the role because “we don’t see enough of women in power on television who are real people, who have integrity, who are kind.” Though Jacqueline “challenges her young employees,” she’s “not unfair, she’s not unreasonable, she’s not backstabbing.” She has “really got something to say, and she has a lot of passion about what she’s doing. That’s the kind of boss she is, and I thought that was refreshing and important for the world.”
Hardin received an Emmy nomination in 2016 for Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Transparent.” She also won two SAG Awards as a member of the ensemble cast of “The Office” (2007-2008), and earned an additional nom for that show in 2009. She has accumulated over 100 acting credits in a 40-plus year career, starting at the age of nine with a guest spot on “Police Story.” In addition to her small screen work, she has appeared in such films as “Thank You for Smoking” (2005), “27 Dresses” (2008), and “17 Again” (2009).
Season two of “The Bold Type” premiered on Tuesday, June 12.
