By performing last during the “America’s Got Talent” Finals, singing father of six Michael Ketterer is the latest act to be presented with the so-called “AGT” curse. Over the first 12 seasons of NBC’s reality TV show only two acts — Grace VanderWaal and Olate Dogs — performed last during their finale nights and went on to win the $1 million prize. Will Michael’s performance of Diana Ross‘ “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” break the curse? Watch the “Americas Got Talent” performance video above, read the judges’ comments below, and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s Season 13 finale.
Heidi Klum: “Michael, I could hear your nerves today. But you are a man with a lot of heart. You’re a man with a lot of integrity. You’re a man with a lot of talent. And I feel like this also could be the winning combination, so you never know.”
Mel B: “I mean, let’s face it, that was a very brave thing to do. You stripped it all the way back. It was just you and the piano and your voice and that was it. Now, I’m not sure if it completely 100% worked or it didn’t work. But I know you and I know your integrity and I know your voice. At the end of the day it’s not up to me, it’s up to America. But well done for being that brave.”
Simon Cowell: “Look, this has nothing to do with the Golden Buzzer thing, Michael. This has been an unbelievable night. That talent’s been amazing. It’s the best final I’ve ever been on. Everyone’s done an amazing job. But I’m gonna say how I feel, which is, I would love you — I’d love to be able to give your family the million dollars and a chance because you’re just an amazing guy. So many people have spoken about you. You were nervous, but that makes you human. Let’s see what happens. But you’re a great, great person, Michael.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about the performance: “The final act of the night is singer, Michael Ketterer. In his intro package, family members of former patients left him messages of how inspiring he is. Every time this guy appears the tears can’t help but well up! Tonight he’s giving his rock n roll twist on ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.’ Who would have predicted Michael would be belting out a haunting version of a Diana Ross classic? Michael is full of charisma, but vocally he has a tendency to drift. That said, could he be any more likable? The judges are on their feet and Simon is pumping up the crowd.”
