Michael Ketterer thanks Simon Cowell for Golden Buzzer on ‘America’s Got Talent’ [WATCH]

Michael Ketterer was the last act to audition on the June 5 episode of “America’s Got Talent” but he was the first (and only) one to get the golden buzzer that sent him straight through to the live shows. He won over head judge Simon Cowell with his stirring rendition of the Bee Gees classic “To Love Somebody.” After catching his breath backstage, this father of six (including five foster children) expressed his heartfelt thanks to Cowell for giving him this big break. As he recalls in the video above, “When he reached over and hit the buzzer, it was like everything inside me exploded.”

Cowell was won over by this soft-spoken singer, who performs with Christian music groups. The crusty Cowell explained his rationale for using his golden buzzer on Ketterer as follows. “For me, it’s just about being real and a surprise. Because you were so nervous, I was concerned for you.”

Cowell was in good company as the other three “AGT” judges were just as jazzed by Ketterer’s singing. Mel B thanked him profusely for his performance, Heidi Klum readily admitted to being “just blown away” and Howie Mandel confessed, “I just want to be a fraction of the human being that you are.”

In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty observed, “Michael Ketterer battled his nerves to sing a gorgeous rendition of “To Love Somebody.” The song was an emotional cap to his remarkable story about his family. Howie called him a star, Mel called him an incredible singer and Simon called him a surprise considering how nervous he was. But the real surprise was when Simon stood up to hit his golden buzzer for Michael, making him the second act of season 13 to go straight through to the live shows!”
