Michelle Sussett (‘Friends’): ‘American Idol’ Venezuelan singer becomes ‘a pop star tonight,’ declares Luke Bryan [WATCH]

Sunday night during the Top 14 performance episode of “American Idol,” 22-year-old Michelle Sussett sang Marshmello & Anne-Marie‘s “Friends” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Miami, Florida resident was born in Venezuela and is hoping that her voice can help support her family back home. Was Michelle’s performance good enough to send her through to the Top 10 of Season 16? Watch the “American Idol” video above and then read the judges’ comments below.

“You know what? You became a pop star tonight,” declared Luke. “That’s what this show needs. A big pop star. You just carved out that lane even more. We felt you had it in you and you made your pop star awaken tonight. And I want a big ol’ pop star on this show.”

Lionel added, “The biggest part about just only having the song is owning your song and owning your presentation. You owned it right there, okay? You gave us attitude, attitude, attitude and I’m really happy to see you grow like this. Keep it up, all right?”

“When I was watching you at first it felt like I was watching Shakira in her beginning stages,” began Katy. “But I think you have to remember there’s a difference between performing live here for the audience and actually performing for the people that are voting watching at home on television and on their devices. You might want to play more toward them, especially with your song choice. I didn’t think this was the best song to actually present all of your talent.”

In his “American Idol” live blog recap, Denton Davidson declared, “Michelle has more of a pop edge than I’ve seen from her previously. That being said, I still don’t see what the judges do in her. Vocally she leaves so much to be desired, no amount of stage presence can make up for it. Although this song succeeds in showing what type of artist Michelle could be, I think it was a terrible song choice for someone trying to win over votes. Not nearly popular or catchy enough.”
