Mike Parker receives ‘closest last-second turn’ in ‘The Voice’ history after ‘So Sick’ performance wows Jennifer Hudson [WATCH]

Monday night during Night 5 of “The Voice” Season 15, soul singer Mike Parker took on NE-YO‘s “So Sick” and caused one coach to turn her chair around: Jennifer Hudson. The former football player came within a second of being eliminated, until Jennifer finally pushed her button. Mike then started jumping around the stage excitedly, as his family cheerfully celebrated backstage. Watch NBC’s “The Voice” blind audition video above and read the coaches’ comments below.

“I love that you didn’t give up,” Jennifer told her newest artist. “The voice was always there and I could hear it. You’re on Team JHud.” Backstage Jennifer was all smiles as she declared, “That had to be the closest last-second turn in the history of ‘The Voice.’ He has the right material. He has a great voice. So he has the right tools to be on Team JHud.”

As for the other coaches, Kelly Clarkson noted, “I’ve never heard someone’s speaking voice so different from their singing voice,” alluding to Mike’s low tone when he started talking. And Adam Levine said that Mike’s enthusiastic reaction to being picked by Jennifer was “one of my favorite moments of today.”

In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Mike Parker from Virginia came to ‘The Voice’ as an opportunity at a second chance after losing his first chance (at college and pro football) due to bad grades. He and his family see his audition to Ne-Yo‘s ‘So Sick’ as a new open door and luckily Jennifer helped him walk through it right at the very last second with her button. Winning him to her team, Jennifer admired Mike’s perseverance, saying that ultimately his determination to continue to sing with everything he had is what won her over in that last second.”
