Sparks flew on the Dolby Theatre stage Tuesday night as diabolo juggler Mochi wowed the crowd during the first live show of “America’s Got Talent” 2018. All four “AGT” judges — Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel — loved what they saw, including the final moments when Mochi’s diabolo starting sparking with electricity. “I almost wanted to throw up because there was so much going on,” noted Simon. Heidi: “I mean, I have to tell you guys, I tried this and nearly knocked my tooth out. It is so hard to do. I could barely keep that thing on the string. And you, Mochi, you are you the best diabolo artist in the world and we are so lucky to have you on ‘America’s Got Talent.’ I mean, it is so hard and you make it look so easy.”
Simon: “Basically it’s a big yo-yo and to make that interesting, which is what you did, was incredible. It was like being on a roller coaster, which was thrilling. At the same I almost wanted to throw up because there was so much going on. And I mean that as a compliment. I think what you did was actually fantastic, it was a show.”
Howie: “I don’t know when they can start voting, but they should start voting now. You need to be in the finals. I’ve never seen such precision. I’ve watched diabolo before. The precision that you have with the video that’s going on — it’s not following you, you’re following it. And then there’s fire and it’s four-dimensional, it’s precision, it’s perfect. You need to be in the finals. Only seven can go through. America: vote!”
Mel: “Well, I absolutely do think that you are super talented. And what you did tonight was amazing. You know, you’ve got tenacity. He’s got the willpower, the thrive, the drive to go on, to be creative. But I have say, the music? Didn’t like it.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty noted, “The first act of the night was Mochi who returned to the stage with his diabolo act that incorporates high res graphics playing behind him to match the movement of his tricks. To raise the bar this week from his past performances, Mochi capped his show off by using a diabolo that shot sparks out of it while he continued to turn tricks. Heidi led the charge with the judges, qualifying on Mochi’s behalf that diabolos are very hard to learn. Simon also loved the act and stressed how incredible it is that he manages to make something that should be boring a thrilling ride ‘like a rollercoaster.'”
