“You missed us. You know you did.” CBS released a first look at the “Murphy Brown” revival Wednesday — and guess what? The “FYI” gang is no longer at “FYI.”
Instead, Murphy (Candice Bergen), Corky (Faith Ford), Frank (Joe Regalbuto) and Miles (Grant Shaud) are now working at a morning news show, launched in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidency. Quick drinking game while you watch the trailer: Take a shot at every Trump dig, new and old.
Murphy sees it as her civic duty to combat “this crazy new world of alternative facts and fake news,” even though the media game has drastically changed since her “FYI” days. Don’t worry, that’s what the new guy is for. Nik Dodani plays Pat Patel, the social media director who will “bring all the olds into the 21st century” and wean Murphy off her Razr flip phone.
The first look also gives us a glimpse of new addition Tyne Daly as Phyllis, Phil’s sister who took over his bar after his death. Not seen in the trailer: Jake McDorman, who plays Avery, Murphy’s son who’s hosting a rival morning show on a conservative network.
“Murphy Brown,” which won 18 Emmys during its original 10-season run, including five for Bergen, will air on Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c on CBS this fall. A premiere date will be announced at a later time.
