The first live show of “So You Think You Can Dance” season 15 brought a bit of controversy. The judges mostly agreed on the performances, but there was a big schism between the panelists after Jay Jay Dixonbey and Jensen Arnold performed a sexy jazz routine choreographed by Mandy Moore. But was it a little too sexy?
That’s what Nigel Lythgoe thought. He felt the sexuality of the routine was too “overt” and was ultimately “overwhelming.” That sounded a lot like another older male judge on a dance competition show, Len Goodman (“Dancing with the Stars“), who is similarly conservative when it comes to routines he deems too raunchy for the dance floor. But just like Goodman usually is on “DWTS,” Lythgoe was voted down by his fellow judges Mary Murphy, Vanessa Hudgens and special guest Twitch.
However, it’s the votes of the viewing audience that counts now. One male dancer and one female dancer will be eliminated next week. Will voters stick up for Dixonbey and Arnold, or will they agree with Lythgoe? Watch their routine above, and read what the judges had to say below.
Nigel Lythgoe: “I think you’re both fantastic dancers, and I think Mandy did a good routine for you, but I’m in a bit of a dilemma here. I’ll tell you why. I think sometimes you can be overtly sexual when you don’t need to be, and it’s sometimes overwhelming. The controlled sexuality in a dance routine is really very special because it leaves something for the audience. Sometimes when you’re too tight and sharp with everything it takes away the true emotion of the routine. It’s really hard for me to say that because you’re both brilliant dancers. I mean, that pirouette into a split jump was just sensational. But somehow for me, this left me a little bit cold. I’m shocked at saying that.”
Mary Murphy: “No way, Nigel. You know what, Jensen, you were a beast out there. You were strong, you are a positive force out there in everything you do, and the way you took [Jay Jay] by the neck and you threw him down to the floor. I mean, it was amazing … And Jay Jay, I couldn’t be more into what you did right now. It was flawless.”
Vanessa Hudgens: “I don’t know what Nigel’s talking about. I thought that was incredible. You guys are so fantastic. Jensen, your precision was just … ooh, I love it! But there was also this air inside of that that just allowed those moments to really hit. And Jay Jay, I feel like there’s nothing you can’t do honestly.”
Twitch: “I am with the ladies. I don’t know what you’re talking about, [Nigel]. That’s all I’ve got to say. I’m with them. They know exactly what they’re talking about. That was incredible.”
