Gothic comedian Oliver Graves slays on ‘America’s Got Talent’ and is brought to tears by judges

Oliver Graves certainly doesn’t look like a standard stand-up comedian, with his gothic style of a black wig and dark eye makeup. Indeed, he had the four judges on “America’s Got Talent” wondering what he was going to do when he auditioned on the July 12 episode. But he soon left them in stitches with his offbeat sense of humor.

He readily admits he makes audiences nervous when he first comes out onstage but he uses their unease to his advantage. His style is one of self-deprecation and by making fun of himself he allows the audience in on the joke. Graves started off tentatively, as it took the crowd time to warm to him. But then he started clicking, landing one joke after another.

The four judges were all enthusiastic about his act, with Howie Mandel, who started as a stand-up himself, being the most enthusiastic. He praised Graves for his intelligence and told him that he’d done himself proud. That brought the comedian to near tears as he readily admitted he does not get a lot of positive feedback for his act. Mel B dubbed him real while Simon Cowell called him memorable.
