Opera singer Daniel Emmet returned to “America’s Got Talent” during Tuesday’s Semifinals 2 episode and belted out “Somewhere” from “West Side Story.” While Heidi Klum gave an enthusiastic standing ovation, the other judges weren’t quite wowed by his performance. Do you think Daniel will avoid the “AGT” Dunkin’ Save this week after making a showing there last week? Watch the “Americas Got Talent” video above, read the judges’ comments below, and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s results show.
Simon Cowell: “Daniel, it’s so interesting tonight because I really understand how important it is for everyone on this stage to do great and get into the Final next week because that is career-changing. The first half was okay, the last 20 seconds was magic. That’s when I heard your operatic voice, which I think is your USP, where you’re strong. You looked confident tonight and you are a fighter. I respect you for that.”
Mel B: “I’m confused because last time that we heard you sing you were singing in a different language and I kind of expected that again tonight, so you threw me off. I don’t know if it’s in a good way or not. I just can’t get away from your voice, because your voice is incredible. Just the performance wasn’t up to par for me, and I don’t even want to say it, but I just did. I’m sorry.”
Heidi Klum: “I mean, I don’t know what you guys are — I really don’t understand it. I love you. I love the crescendo of this song, the way you’re taking it there all the way to the climax. I mean, mic drop. For me, this was the best performance of the night so far. I love you, I really do.”
Howie Mandel: “I just thought it was musical theater. I didn’t love it. But I love you, and I think you can give us so much more, so good luck.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about the performance: “The fourth act performing is opera singer Daniel Emmet. He admits to being unprepared for his audition and was overwhelmed when he won the Duncan Save in the quarterfinals. Tonight he is performing ‘Somewhere’ from ‘West Side Story.’ Brilliant song choice. Daniel isn’t original at all and you can hear a voice like this on any Broadway stage, but the guy has charisma. More importantly, he’s got a great voice and knows how to build a song. Well done!”
