Vanity Fair Oscar-watcher Krista Smith predicts “The Shape of Water” will win Best Picture because “it hits all of the notes,” she says in our webcam chat. (Watch above or listen to audio podcast version below). “It’s a full, realized story. It’s so original. Director Guillermo Del Toro is a master.”
Runner-up is probably “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” she notes, but adds, “My number two would be ‘Dunkirk’ if I was a voter. The film showed you want war was like.”
However, Krista warns to watch out for “Get Out,” since “all of the new, young voters” could rank it in second or third on their ballots, triggering a surprise win thanks to the quirks of the preferential ballot.
