Long overdue, but worth the wait: Finally, here’s a sassy predictions chat with two of Hollywood’s reigning Oscarologists: Anne Thompson (Indiewire) and Susan Wloszczyna, who’ve been predicting Oscars with us at Gold Derby for more than a decade. Watch video above or listen to the audio podcast below as we track the current state of the derby.
Is “A Star Is Born” really out front for Best Picture? Yes, says Anne, right now, but she reminds us that things could change by next week. Oscar mojo is a fickle thing. And, yes, Lady Gaga is ahead for Best Actress, according to most of our Experts, but Anne leads the charge for a different outcome for that race: Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”). Susan picks Glenn Close (“The Wife”), confessing, “because I want her to win!”

Anne and Susan – along with Sasha Stone (AwardsDaily) – are les grandes dames of Oscar punditry. They’re beloved veteran wags who’ve been around since the early days of the modern era of Oscarmania. As journalists, they’ve been covering the beat since the 1990s – that’s when the explosion of awards coverage occurred. That’s when the film studios suddenly started to spend aggressively on campaigning – huge FYC campaigns, lavish parties, Q&A screenings, blitzing academy members with VHS tapes and DVDs. E! network launched live red-carpet TV shows. Sasha and I launched the first websites devoted to Oscar punditry. Susan covered the spectacular Oscar beat for USA Today and the Gannett newswire. Anne covered it for Entertainment Weekly, Premiere magazine, Variety and Hollywood Reporter. Now Anne works for Indiewire (also owned by Penske Media) and Gold Derby recently hired Susan full time as our new senior editor. And Sasha continues to thrive at AwardsDaily (which she owns independently) where she provides the smartest, sassiest and most emotionally poignant Oscar articles anywhere.
Tune in to my first Oscar slugfest with Susan and Anne. Many more will come! Promise. (And, hopefully, we can recruit Sasha to join us next time. We did invite her this time, but she was busy at the Savannah Film Festival.)BELOW: Audio podcast version.
