Will ‘Pitch Perfect’ three-peat at the Teen Choice Awards? Aca-awesome!

In the Teen Choice Awards race for Choice Comedy Movie, the blockbuster “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is the front-runner, according to the forecasts of hundreds of Gold Derby users. But might we be underestimating the aca-sequel “Pitch Perfect 3”? The a cappella musical franchise is nominated in this category for the third time, and it won both of its previous nominations.

“Pitch Perfect 3” trails in our users’ predictions with 9/1 odds, behind leading “Jumanji” (21/20) and groundbreaking same-sex romance “Love, Simon” (2/1). It has just three other nominations this year, all in the race for Choice Comedy Movie Actress (Anna Kendrick, Hailee Steinfeld and Rebel Wilson). But the aca-ladies have proven formidable before.

The first film was a sleeper hit and won 4 of its 11 nominations in 2013: Choice Comedy Movie, Choice Comedy Movie Actor (Skylar Astin), Choice Comedy Movie Actress (Wilson) and Choice Movie Villain (Adam DeVine).

“Pitch Perfect 2” did even better in 2015, winning 5 out of its 10 bids: Choice Comedy Movie, Choice Comedy Movie Actor (Astin), Choice Comedy Movie Actress (Kendrick), Choice Movie Chemistry (Kendrick and Brittany Snow) and Choice Movie Hissy Fit (Kendrick). So teens have had great “Pitch” over the years.

That said, neither previous “Pitch” movie had to face a blockbuster the size of “Jumanji.” The reimagining of the 1995 Robin Williams action comedy opened last December with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan in lead roles (all four earned nominations for their performances). It ended up grossing $404 million domestically and $962 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. That’s a pretty modest budget by today’s action-movie standards, so by those standards its box office success was even more dramatic.

So will “Pitch Perfect” continue its aca-reign, or has it finally met its aca-match?
