‘Project Runway All Stars’: Why are the women dropping like flies in season 6?

Season six of “Project Runway All Stars” is ostensibly a battle between veterans who have appeared on “All Stars” before and rookies who are competing in this spin-off series for the first time. However, after five weeks of competition we’ve seen a different competitive split: between men and women. And it’s not looking good for the women so far. The female designers have been dropping like flies.

The season started with 16 designers overall: 7 men and 9 women. But the early results have been lopsided. Five out of six eliminations thus far have been women, while five of the six design challenge winners have been men. At least one of those eliminations was a surprise: Amanda Valentine was the front-runner to win the competition according to our racetrack odds going into “Fashion’s New Superheroes,” but she was eliminated, which 93% of our readers disagreed with. She followed Kelly Dempsey who went down in week two (“Damsels in Distress“), Ari South and Melissa Fleis who were axed in a dual elimination in week three (“Perfect Pairings“) and Candice Cuoco who fell victim to an unconventional challenge in week four (“Balls Out“). The only man eliminated thus far was Carlos Casanova in the season premiere episode.

There are 10 designers left in the competition and only four women remain: controversial veteran Helen Castillo and rookies Kimberly Goldson, Char Glover and Merline Labissiere. And of those only Goldson has made it through the competition without a single week in the judges’ bottom three. Only one woman has won “All Stars” in five previous seasons — Dom Streater in season five in 2016 — but could one of them still win the competition? And do you think the women have gotten a fair shake so far?
