Monday, December 3 on “The Voice,” Reagan Strange took on “Cry” for Team Adam Levine during the Top 10 performance episode. After being the most-streamed artist for the past two weeks, Reagan was hoping that this powerful Faith Hill cover would help her go three-for-three. Do you think this performance was good enough for Reagan to advance to next week’s Top 8 show for Team Adam? Read the coaches’ comments below.
Blake Shelton: “I want to cry because you didn’t pick me as your coach. I’m still not over that. I’ve gotta be one of your biggest fans and I know that right there was a tough song. That has the lower register and the higher register. You did a great job on it, sis. Every time you get on stage you do a great job. So once again, good job.”
Kelly Clarkson: “Reagan, yeah, he’s not playing around. That is probably Faith Hill’s rangiest song. That is a big song. But honestly it wasn’t even your big, soaring notes that I love about you most. What I love about you most is something that can’t be taught because you’re so young — you’re 14. Even when you said the word pity in that song, it’s like still sticking with me. How you express the word pity and how you express emotion, you can’t teach people. It’s a really beautiful thing that you innately have. It’s my favorite part of you.”
Adam Levine: “Well, you know, it’s crazy because that song she actually wound up raising a half-step higher than the original, which is a crazy thing to do because it’s already so rangy and so high. Above the technical stuff like as Kelly was saying, Reagan, I really think that when you get up there and sing you just command the attention of everybody in the room with no distraction, with no other things going on other than the purity and the simplicity of your beautiful voice. That’s something that I always feel should be rewarded on this show the most. I am nothing but proud of you. Congratulations.”
Prior to this performance of “Cry,” Reagan sang “Meant to Be” during the blind auditions, “Photograph” during the battles, “Dancing On My Own” during the knockouts, “Worth It” during Top 26 week, “You Say” during Top 13 week and “Complicated” during Top 11 week.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about the live performance: “She’s a little off-key throughout the first verse, but hits her stride during the chorus. During the second verse, she continues to struggle with some of the lower notes and clearly feels more comfortable in her belting range. Unfortunately, I just can’t get into this. It goes from off-key to screaming. Fortunately for Reagan, it won’t matter. She’s clearly got the fan base to sail into next week.”
