Ron Cephas Jones (‘This Is Us’) wins Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy at 2018 Creative Arts

On his second career Emmy nomination, Ron Cephas Jones has just won the trophy for Best Drama Guest Actor for NBC’s family drama “This Is Us” at Saturday’s 2018 Creative Arts ceremony. See the complete list of winners.

Jones plays William, the biological father of Randall (Sterling K. Brown), on the tear-jerking drama. While Jones was nominated last year in the supporting race, this time around he campaigned in the guest category because William actually died in the Season 1 episode “Memphis,” so he only appeared in flashbacks and via voice-overs in Season 2.

Jones’ episode submission was the season opener, titled “A Father’s Advice,” in which viewers heard William reading a poem about love. His beautiful words served as the narration for the opening and closing of the episode. Jones also had one scene in the middle of the hour, a flashback to William speaking with Randall’s wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) in a park about the gratitude he felt that they took him in.

Just last year another “This Is Us” guest star — Gerald McRaney — took home the trophy for Best Drama Guest Actor, making NBC’s family drama the repeat winner in this category. McRaney was again nominated this year. The other four nominees this time around were Matthew Goode (“The Crown”), F. Murray Abraham (“Homeland”), Cameron Britton (“Mindhunter”) and Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”).
