Back during the original run of “Roseanne” series star Roseanne Barr won a 1993 Emmy for Best Comedy Actress, a truly “overwhelming” and “awesome” experience, she recently told Gold Derby. Now, 25 years later, Barr has an uphill climb if she hopes to win a bookend trophy after tweeting a racist comment that resulted in the “Roseanne” revival being canceled. The good news? Barr’s name appears on the 2018 Emmy ballot. The bad news? Only 22% of readers who voted in our recent poll think she’ll earn a nomination.
“TV academy members will still vote for her,” said those 22% of supporters who don’t think she’ll be punished by the Emmys. Conversely, a whopping 71% of readers voted that “there’s no way in heck she’ll get a nom.” Rounding out the poll results, 7% of fans were on the fence, declaring that they’ll “have to think about it more.”
Barr’s Hollywood downfall began when she tweeted that one-time Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, who is African-American, was a cross between the “muslim brotherhood” and “planet of the apes.” ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey promptly canceled “Roseanne,” writing in a statement that Bar’s comment was “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”
Here’s a look at some of the passionate comments from readers on both sides of the Roseanne Barr debate. What do YOU think will happen when the Emmy noms are announced July 12? Let us know down in the comments section.
Pier Antoni: “NO NOMINATION for this FEMALE TRUMP. She’s a national disgrace with her racism and bigotry!”
Patrickj88: “She made a racist, ignorant comment … but, we all make mistakes and instead of continue to hate … we should all learn and grow. Nominating her would bring racism into the Hollywood spotlight and Roseanne could use that for good.”
Kristopher Kaun: “No, the Television Academy should not pull enough votes for a nomination for her. She crabbed and whined years ago, when she wasn’t nominated the first time round, and then crabbed and whined when Candice Bergen won, telling the stand-up crowd that Candice couldn’t act her way out of a paperbag. Then, Roseanne wins, but doesn’t show up. No more!”
Bob: “Whatever happened to freedom of speech. Everyone has said or did something we shouldn’t have. I would love to see her get a much deserved nomination.”
Charles Lambeth: “She’s a disgrace. However, these awards are about acting, not personal behavior. Having said that, she is actually the LEAST talented of the major actors on the show (Goodman, Metcalfe, and Gilbert are tons better), and for THAT reason Roseanne shouldn’t get a nomination.”
