“RuPaul’s Drag Race” returned to VH1 on March 22 with the debut of its 10th season. In an all-new episode on March 29, the remaining 13 queens were tasked with taking part in a musical spoof. Which contestant came out on top as the winner of the challenge? And were Gold Derby’s predictions correct that Kalorie Karbdashian-Williams would be eliminated this week?
In last week’s premiere episode, she came perilously close to being bounced but Vanessa Vanjie Mateo went home instead. Both had to strut their stuff to “Ain’t No Other Man,” one of the biggest hits of guest judge Christina Aguilera. Mayhem Miller had earned the right to play judge and jury by winning the main challenge. In celebration of the series’ 10 season anniversary, that had been a throwback to the very first challenge ever – drag on a dime.
Joining RuPaul Charles, Ross Matthews and Michelle Visage on the judges panel in episode two are Halsey and Padma Lakshmi. Below, check out our minute-by-minute recap of Season 3, Episode 2, titled “PharmaRusical,” to find out what happened Thursday night. Then be sure to sound off in the comments section about your favorite queens and who you think will join the list of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winners.
7:59 p.m. – “Miss Vanjie. Miss Vanjie. Miss Vaaanjie.” Aww I already miss Vanjie–I think she might be one of my favorite first boots of the entire series and this season is missing out on some great moments with her already gone. Thankfully, this season promises to be loaded with guest appearances by all star queens. Tonight the legendary Alyssa Edwards will show up to help the girls prepare for the musical challenge. I can’t wait to see what she has to say about the new crop of queens vying for the crown!
8:01 p.m. – The mood in the workroom after Vanessa’s elimination is celebratory, not that Vanessa went home, but that she had such a huge impact in such a short amount of time. I love seeing that reaction from the girls. Unfortunately that sense of sisterhood soon turned back into the topic of the similarities between the looks of Miz Cracker and Aquaria. If that wasn’t enough, The Vixen got in the middle of it by calling Aquaria out for downplaying how upset she was about the Cracker issue so that could be a new budding feud. And this is only the beginning…
8:05 p.m. – For this week’s mini challenge, Andy Cohen is in the house with Ru to host a “Hay Girl Hay” hoe down to find the most entertaining dancer. Each girl has 20 minutes to get into a “quick drag” country look and then they’ll dance to country music to determine the winner. The two winners of the mini challenge are Asia O’Hara and Vixen!
8:10 p.m. – As winners of the mini challenge, Asia and Vixen earned spots as the captains of two teams that will compete in the maxi challenge. For the maxi challenge, Ru has asked the teams to perform in a spoof performance of a pharmaceutical ad that is also a musical, “Pharmarusical.” Asia’s team is: Aquaria, Monique, Dusty, Yuhua, and Kalorie and Vixen’s selections are: Kameron, Cracker, Monet, Blair and Mayhem. That left Eureka as the last selected with the opportunity to choose her own team. She joined Asia’s team, much to Asia’s dismay.
8:17 p.m. – At the start of rehearsals on Team Vixen, her team tried to lobby for which parts they wanted, but Vixen kept all the power to herself and decided to assign roles herself. A bold move for a captain to make because she’ll ultimately be responsible for any bad casting if their team comes under fire. At Team Asia, Eureka gets off to a predictably bad start by being too vocal for Asia’s taste. That causes Asia to snap back at Eureka, creating a ton of tension that the rest of the team picked up on.
8:28 p.m. – When the time comes to learn choreography, the queens arrive on the main stage to find Alyssa who has created dance routines for both teams. Team Asia is first to practice and to Alyssa’s surprise they’ve created something on their own already and she likes it! Later in rehearsal, Kalorie struggled to hit her marks as hard as Alyssa prefers while Eureka battled what she called “PTSD” from the knee injury she suffered on a similar challenge during season 9, but Alyssa was supportive and hoped for the best for Eureka.
8:33 p.m. – As she did with Team Asia, Alyssa asked Team Vixen if they worked on anything on their own and they hadn’t. Alyssa clocked them all though when they said they worked on characterization, but that was coming off as one of the more shaky aspects of what they showed her at rehearsals. On an individual basis, Cracker wasn’t using big enough movements and Blair St. Clair lacked coordination, coming off at the weak links of the squad.
8:42 p.m. – After choreo practice and during makeup application, Team Vixen is already preparing for the worst and fully expecting to lose. Is this the editors setting us up for a come from behind win?!
8:51 p.m. – The performance from Team Asia brought in major laughs from the judges, especially when Dusty Ray Bottoms and Yuhua Hamasaki were front and center, but Aquaria impressed by hitting her choreo marks perfectly. On the other side of things, Eureka and Kalorie both got side-eyed for awkward moments or poor lip synching. As for Team Vixen, despite their apparent problems during the rehearsal process, they, too, made the judges gag and were leagues better at characterization and lip synching than Team Asia–I’d say Monet X Change, Mayhem Miller, Vixen and Cracker were the standouts though overall they all performed really well.
9:07 p.m. – After the runway presentation, Team Vixen was indeed selected as the winning team! Within the team, The Vixen was chosen as the overall winner because of her leadership position. That makes her the winner of both the mini and maxi challenges in the same episode! That’s huge for her. But that means that Team Asia is on the bottom and all seven of them will receive deeper critiques from the judges.
9:12 p.m. – Luckily for Asia, as the team leader of the losing team she could have been most in danger but her stunning runway look earned high marks from the judges. Yuhua was applauded for an outstanding performance in the musical, but was told that her runway look is underwhelming. Her defense that she had something better, but didn’t use it also didn’t sit well. Dusty (without the dots on her face, as Michelle suggested last week) impressed the entire panel for both her runway look at her engaging performance. Padma read Monique for filth about her confusing runway look and for missing her mark during the performance and then Kalorie received a similarly harsh critique. Ross and Michele were harsh on Eureka for not being up to par during the performance, but Padma called her catsuit on the runway the best of many catsuits. Last, Aquaria earned high marks for both her fashion forward runway look and for her dance skills, but her characterization left a lot to be desired.
9:24 p.m. – Based on deliberation, Ru grants Asia, Aquaria, Dusty and Yuhua immediate safety. With Kalorie, Monique and Eureka left standing, Monique is declared safe, meaning Kalorie will lip sync for the second week in a row, but this time against vet and best friend Eureka. Their last chance to impress Ru is a lip sync to “Best of My Love” by The Emotions.
9:27 p.m. – After reading as defeated during the challenge, Eureka shows passion and energy in the battle with Kalorie who lacks the fire that she brought to the lip sync last week. All eyes are certainly on Eureka in this matchup and so not surprisingly she earns safety. That means Kalorie is the second queen to exit this season, with a cute going away message: “Remember, Kalories are friends… and food.”
