The third episode of season 10 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” airs April 5 on VH1. On “Tap That App,” the remaining 12 queens will be divided into three teams to tackle the main challenge: filming an ad for a new dating app. Joining RuPaul Charles, Carson Kressley and Michelle Visage on the judges panel in episode three will be singer Courtney Love and actor Nico Tortorella (“Younger”). Our exclusive Gold Derby predictions are forecasting that they will choose Yuhua Hamasaki as the winner of this main challenge.
Conversely, we are predicting that Dusty Ray Bottoms, a 29-year-old who also hails from the Big Apple, will be eliminated at the end of episode three. Do you agree? Be sure to make your predictions at the bottom of this post.
Last week, The Vixen won the main challenge after she captained the better team at staging a mini-musical spoof. The judges sent Kalorie Karbdashian-Williams packing after the lip sync challenge, preferring Eureka’s moves to “Best of My Love,” one of the biggest hits of The Emotions. Did you agree with their decision? Vote in our poll below and sound off in the comments section about your favorite queens and who you think will join the list of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winners.
Below, check out our minute-by-minute recap of Season 3, Episode 3, titled “Tap That App,” to find out what happened Thursday night. Then be sure to sound off in the comments section about your favorite queens and who you think will join the list of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winners.
7:55 p.m. – On most reality competition shows, team challenges can be the worst, but on Drag Race they’re the best because we get to see the queens bounce their own comedy off of each other and engage in some good old fashioned improv. Because tonight’s challenge sounds like it’ll be comedic in nature, I’d guess Monet X Change, Monique Heart and Miz Cracker to do really well, but perhaps one of the pageant girls can exceed expectations?
8:01 p.m. – Immediately following last week’s elimination, Vixen comes under fire for winning the challenge despite having borrowed a wig from another queen. According to Aquaria that should have disqualified her from winning. Following that, Monique gets upset over being in the bottom and not trusting judges’ opinion of her look, but Vixen says maybe she’s just not doing as well as she thinks.
8:04 p.m. – For this week’s mini challenge the queens have 20 minutes to don a drag look for a chocolate bar commercial screen test that is designed to make Ru laugh. The three queens that outperformed the others are Blair St. Clair, Monet and Monique! As winners they become the team leaders for the maxi challenge.
8:08 p.m. – For the maxi challenge, the three teams will write and star in comedic commercials for three fake apps. Blair’s team is: Cracker, Eureka, Vixen; Monique’s is: Dusty, Kameron Michaels, Mayhem Miller; and Monet’s is: Asia O’Hara, Aquaria and Yuhua.
8:17 p.m. – During rehearsals, on Blair’s team Eureka goes the expected route with fat jokes and Vixen isn’t having it. Over at Monique’s team, Mayhem and Kameron fight over which one of them is going to be the narrator. And on Monet’s team, Yuhua, last picked by any of the leaders, is at odds with her team first for lacking the creativity of everyone else and second for being sensitive about their opinions during makeup application.
8:26 p.m. – Team Fibstr (Monique’s team), an app for pathological liars, is first up to shoot their commercial with Michelle and Carson on set to help direct them. On set, Kameron falls flat in her role as narrator and the only laughs Monique gets is because she’s not just acting but also thinks she’s directing herself, yelling out “action” and “cut” whenever she screws up her lines. Her micromanagement extends into the scenes being handled by the other girls where she directs their scenes as well.
8:30 p.m. – Team Endofdays (Blair’s team), a dating app for more than just the gays, is much more interactive than Fibstr was, allowing for Eureka, Cracker and Blair to be in one scene together where they all work really well together, especially Eureka and Cracker whose chemistry is on point. Vixen, however, is taking the whole thing much more seriously and sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the other girls.
8:33 p.m. – Team MadamButtrFace (Monet’s team), an app for women who have everything but a pretty face, isn’t as well-rounded as the previous team, but Asia impresses Michelle and Carson with one deeply unsettling facial expression and it makes Monet jealous. Yuhua, in a scene by herself, flops completely, leaving the judges and her team confused by the difficulty she’s having.
8:39 p.m. – On elimination day during makeup application, Aquaria brought up again her frustration over Vixen using someone else’s wig to represent her own “best drag” in last week’s challenge. Thankfully, mid-argument a spider is spotted in the workroom and all the girls run around screaming, dissolving the fight between Aquaria and Vixen.
8:42 p.m. – During a heart to heart between Dusty and Blair, Dusty opens up her past and the painful experience of being outed by her conservative parents and then put through an exorcism (to exorcise the gay out of him) and a straight camp (a camp to help turn him “not gay”). The other girls rally around Dusty and support her in a rare instance of sisterhood in an episode that turns yet again to the drama between Aquaria and Vixen. Ugh. The two of them refuse to stop the fight and though most of the girls agree with Vixen’s side of the argument they also try to ask Vixen to be the bigger girl in the situation an diffuse the drama.
8:52 p.m. – Tonight’s runway category is: feathers. The gag-worthy looks are Eureka in a high-collared black gown, similar to the dark queen theme Kameron goes with later, Asia’s Tweety Bird yellow dress and Monique in a white & gold phoenix ensemble. On the flip side, Cracker, Yuhua and Aquaria all go with expected silhouettes and boring looks that they’ve basically showed on the runway for the last two weeks.
9:01 p.m. – After the runway, the commercials screen for the judges. Each commercial had their own dud that should have been in the bottom–Vixen, Mayhem and Yuhua were the respective worst in their groups. Vixen’s performance was completely dry compared to the hilarious Eureka, Cracker and Blair. Mayhem’s scene was shoved into the end of her group’s commercial and made no sense. And Yuhua’s “ugly” makeup was out of place for not being nearly as ugly as Asia and Aquaria’s. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the three of them in the bottom this week and with a boring runway look to boot, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Yuhua asked to lip sync for her life.
9:10 p.m. – Based on the judges’ scores, Asia, Eureka and Blair are announced as the three tops while Yuhua, Kameron and Mayhem fall to the bottom. Blair gets a ton of praise from Carson for both her look and her ability to lead her team to a successful commercial. Nico expresses his adoration for Eureka and Michelle backs him up, telling her that she had the funniest lines in the ad and that she’s finally being the queen they expected her to be.
9:13 p.m. – Mayhem takes heat for the disjointed depiction of her scenes in the ad, but she diverts blame to Monique, saying she didn’t speak up to the team leader because she wanted to be a team player. Also on the bottom is Kameron, but the judges all love her runway look, telling her that it was her poor performance in the ad that landed her at the bottom.
9:14 p.m. – Courtney loves Asia’s Tweety look and Michelle loved her performance in the ad, both noting that Asia stole the show with her creativity. Yuhua, as expected, gets knocked for not having an ugly enough ugly face and then butts heads with Michelle when she attempts to make excuses.
9:23 p.m. – Because of her chic runway look and standing out in the ad, Asia is declared this week’s winner! That means Eureka and Blair are both safe. On the bottom side of things, Yuhua is put up for elimination first and she’s pitted against Mayhem for a lip sync of Hole‘s “Celebrity Skin.”
9:26 p.m. – Given a big rock song, Mayhem goes super hard and brings passion and energy to the stage. Yuhua tries to match the vitality of Mayhem’s performance, but it all looks a lot less authentic and goes down an expected route. The clear winner, Mayhem is asked to stay, which means Yuhua has to sashay away, becoming the third queen eliminated this season. In her goodbye message, Yuhua takes responsibility for getting in her own head too much and wishes all the other girls good luck. She’s such a sweetie, but I think the judges made the right call.
