The seventh episode of season 10 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” airs May 3 on VH1. On “Snatch Game,” the remaining eight queens must impersonate celebrities in the annual spoof comedy challenge. Joining RuPaul Charles, Carson Kressley and Michelle Visage on the judges panel in episode seven is six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald and “Sports Illustrated” cover girl and actress Kate Upton.
Our exclusive Gold Derby predictions are forecasting that they will choose Asia O’Hara as the winner of this main challenge. Conversely, we are predicting that Monique Heart — a 31-year-old who hails from Kansas City, Missouri — will be eliminated at the end of episode seven. Do you agree? Be sure to make your predictions at the bottom of this post.
For now, follow along for our minute-by-minute live recap. Keep refreshing throughout the episode for new updates.
7:55 p.m. – Snatch Game is the most anticipated episode of each season, but recently (and I don’t think any fan will argue with this) the queens haven’t brought their very best to the iconic challenge. This season, however, is loaded with comedy queens that have already proven themselves to be quick on their feet–Miz Cracker, Eureka and Monique have all had great performances in the last two episodes of improv-centric challenges. Will one of those three lead the charge to make this a Snatch Game to remember?
8:01 p.m. – Last week Eureka became the first queen to win two challenges in a row while The Vixen fell into the bottom two and had to lip sync for the first time. Monique on the other hand is concerned that she hasn’t been in the very bottom or the very top yet and so feels like she’s riding the middle of the pack and she doesn’t like that. Monique’s frustration stems from what she calls a lack of funds that have hindered her from having looks that are as well-polished as the other girls.
8:04 p.m. – For tonight’s mini challenge the girls participate in another annual favorite challenge–the “Reading Is Fundamental” challenge where each queen gets to read the others for filth. Perhaps because she smartly called all the other girls out for only having fat jokes to make about her, Eureka was declared the winner!
8:09 p.m. – As Vixen points out, reaching the Snatch Game episode is a mile-marker for every queen that gets cast on the show. This week’s maxi challenge will test their skills at celebrity impersonation, improvisation and of course their ability to make Ru laugh.
8:14 p.m. – While preparing, Bianca Del Rio visits the workroom to hear from the queens about what their plans are. Here’s a rundown of who each queen will be impersonating: Kameron Michaels as Chyna, Vixen as Blue Ivy, Eureka as Honey Boo Boo (Bianca and Ru both lead her away from doing Divine), Monique as Maxine Waters (though she struggles to convey why that would be funny), Asia O’Hara as… well, we don’t know because Ru and Bianca talked her out of Whitney Houston and Beyonce.
8:24 p.m. – The last three are: Cracker as Dorothy Parker (uhhh… oof), Aquaria as Melania Trump and Monet X Change as Maya Angelou. By the end of the session, Asia had settled on Beyonce for her impersonation. Both Asia as Beyonce and Vixen as Blue Ivy were ballsy choices according to Monique who points out that neither has a very strong personality with respect to a portrayal of them on something as humor-dependent as Snatch Game. I can’t say I disagree with her. Based on the impersonations as a whole this could actually turn out to be yet another underwhelming and flop Snatch Game. Ugh!
8:32 p.m. – The contestants for tonight’s Snatch Game are the episode’s guest judges, Audra and Kate. During character introductions Monique gets off to a good start as Maxine, focusing on an anti-Trump joke, but Asia flops her first joke as Beyonce. Aquaria produces a pretty strong gag when she hands Ru a present with a “help me” sign inside and then Eureka gets all the LOLs with her over the top impersonation of Honey Boo Boo.
8:38 p.m. – Okay what just happened? After a question to Monique somehow Vixen and Asia (as well as Monet) get wrapped up in a back and forth as their characters, mostly resulting in Asia taking a dark turn with Beyonce who, apparently, not only curses to the other panelists, but also speaks sternly to her daughter? I think it might be one of the most off impersonations I can remember.
8:41 p.m. – For one of the last clues, Alex Trebek makes a surprise appearance for a “gaily double” video clue! To that clue, Monique delivers another stale joke, passing it off to Eureka who once again uses pictures as her answers and makes both Kate and Audra roll with laughter.
8:45 p.m. – By the end, this year’s Snatch Game actually might have been one of the best in recent years because there were so many cringe moments. Asia and Vixen played off of each other too much and neither were very funny, Monique’s jokes were also on the mean-spirited side and never landed and then both Kameron and Cracker didn’t have a strong presence while not being exactly bad. On the other hands, Monet delivered a strong turn as Maya, Eureka got huge laughs with every joke and Aquaria somehow made Melania really quick and funny despite her fear at being good at this type of challenge. I think it’s clear who we can expect to be in the top at this point, but it’ll be interesting to see which two of the other five fall into the bottom.
8:50 p.m. – Before receiving their critiques from the judges, the queens prepare to walk the runway in their best “mermaid” drag. While getting into their looks, Asia and Vixen discuss how terrible they did, but Vixen turns the conversation to Eureka and chastises her for taking the spotlight away from the other girls. Thankfully Monet, the voice of reason, points out that Vixen is probably just jealous of how well Eureka did.
9:01 p.m. – I am LOL because as mermaids instead of walking the runway all the queens are being rolled across the stage in a wheelchair by a member of the pit crew. For me, the memorable looks are Aquaria in an all black “lethargic” look, Asia (memorable in a bad way) in a Lisa Frank-ish masked costume and Eureka in a black suit as well, but with really bright makeup and hair that she calls Ursula’s cousin twice-removed.
9:04 p.m. – The decision is, of course, up to the judges though. Safe this week is Cracker and Kameron, leaving the other six on stage to hear whether they are a top or a bottom for the week.
9:09 p.m. – Kate tells Aquaria that her runway look is “very Italian Vogue” and Carson has really high marks for her as well. Audra backs them up with more support for her Snatch Game performance as Melania. Monique takes heat from Michelle about both her impersonation and her runway look. Hearing the negative feedback, Monique expresses disappointment, but ultimately just looks defeated. Asia catches a lot of flack for playing Beyonce so mean-spirited, but Kate might have saved her by complimenting her decision to wear an artsy mask as a mermaid.
9:12 p.m. – Vixen gets a mixed reaction–on the one hand the judges like parts of her mermaid look (they don’t like the bra), and on the other they really hated her humorless take on Blue Ivy. Monet also gets a mixed reaction, though in the opposite way with high marks for Snatch Game and low marks for her runway outfit. Eureka, as expected, is loved for both her visual presentation and her impersonation of Honey Boo Boo.
9:14 p.m. – In an unexpected twist, Ru asks each of the girls to call out which other girl should be eliminated. Eureka says Asia (she’s competition), Monet says Vixen (performance based), Vixen says Eureka (for her abrasive personality), Asia says Vixen (needs to grow), Monique says Vixen (performance based) and Aquaria says Vixen (season based). The noteworthy moment here though is that after Vixen called out Eureka the two of them got into an argument on stage, but I think Eureka made much more sense in defending herself against being personally attacked in a situation that didn’t necessarily call for as much harshness as Vixen through at her.
9:24 p.m. – This week Aquaria wins (her second of the season, matching Eureka’s two)! With that, both Eureka and Monet are declared safe as well. Vixen is the first to be named in the bottom two followed by Monique (I actually think Asia’s mask and Audra’s love for it saved her). The lip sync tonight is to Carly Rae Jepsen’s absolute smash “Cut to the Feeling.” Quickly into the song wigs and costumes fly away, but then at the start of the second verse it becomes clear that Monique didn’t know the words to the song. At the end, Ru doesn’t look pleased at all and without the bat of a lash, sends Monique home.
