‘GLOW’ could crush the SAG Awards TV stunt ensemble race with 7-time champ ‘Game of Thrones’ MIA

It’s the end of an era. With seven-time champ “Game of Thrones” ineligible, there will be a new TV stunt ensemble winner at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for the first time in eight years. So who has the edge in the Westeros-less field?

In our early predictions, “GLOW” is favored to win, with 82/25 odds, ahead of “Westworld,” “Daredevil,” Jack Ryan” and “The Walking Dead.” “Jack Ryan” is the only newbie of the group. “The Walking Dead” is on its seventh bid, “Daredevil” is on its third, while “GLOW” and “Westworld” are on nomination No. 2.

“GLOW” has lots of flashy, highly stylized wrestling sequences, and it has the benefit of being on Netflix, which is SAG voters’ network of choice. “Daredevil,” which was recently canceled despite strong Season 3 reviews as Netflix cleans out its Marvel slate, is also on Netflix and features a stunning one-take, 11-minute prison fight scene, but unlike “GLOW,” it has never received an acting nomination from SAG.

If voters are feeling sentimental, the most overdue nominee is clearly “The Walking Dead,” which had the misfortune of going up against “Game of Thrones” every single year until now. It also holds the record for the most nominations in the category without a win.

The stunt category was added at the 14th ceremony, held in 2008, and the first recipient was “24,” which won again two years later. “Heroes” won in between the Fox series’ twin wins and “True Blood” was the last non-“Game of Thrones” champ in 2011.

But whoever wins next month won’t start a new streak because you know “Game of Thrones” will be nominated and win again in 2020 for its final season.
