On tonight’s “Saturday Night Live,” the long-running NBC variety series skewered the current Academy Awards problems in finding a host. The show offered 14 performers “secret auditions” to host the 91st Oscars in February with a pre-recorded sketch. Poking fun at the ongoing host situation follows Kevin Hart recently declining the gig after past tweets with homophobic overtones.
Episode host Matt Damon did an admirable job impersonating both Chris Hemsworth and Matthew McConaughey. Regular cast members took on Roseanne Barr, Rachel Brosnahan, Terry Crews, Ellen DeGeneres, Hannah Gadsby, Tiffany Haddish, Allison Janney, Rami Malek, Sarah Silverman, Michael Strahan, Kanye West and Michelle Wolf. The episode for December 15 opened with guest star Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump in a parody of the iconic Christmas film “It’s a Wonderful Life,” this time called it’s a wonderful Trump. It featured guest stars Ben Stiller as Michael Cohen, Robert De Niro as Robert Mueller, Damon as Brett Cavanaugh and regular “SNL” cast members as Trump family members and staffers. Musical guests for this installment were Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson.
Will this be an episode that finally brings Damon a first ever Emmy Award? “SNL” is the all-time record holder for victories with 72 as of last September. It has triumphed for Best Variety Sketch Series the past two years.
