Penn plays Tom Hagerty, an astronaut on the first human mission to the fourth planet in the drama that’s set in the near future. The moody teaser is jam-packed with stunning visuals, accompanied with a contemplative voiceover by Penn musing on the vast unknown.
“I always think of [Carl] Sagan‘s words: Every human being who ever was lived out their lives on a mound of dust suspended in a sunbeam,” he says.
Created by Beau Willimon, “The First” also stars Natascha McElhone, as Laz Ingram, an aerospace magnate who’s heading the historic mission, LisaGay Hamilton, Hannah Ware, Keiko Agena, Rey Lucas, James Ransone, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Brian Lee Franklin and Oded Fehr.
“The First” marks Penn’s first major TV role; he previously showed off his comedic chops with guest spots on “Friends,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Family Guy” and “Two and a Half Men.” With Hulu being such an Emmy force now, thanks to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” could the streaming service bag an Emmy for the two-time Oscar winner next year? As fate would have it, Willimon, of course, created “House of Cards,” which stars Penn’s ex-wife Robin Wright, who is seeking her sixth nomination for the series next year.
Hulu will release all eight episodes of “The First” on Friday, Sept. 14.
