Last we checked it’s still April, but the creepy first teaser trailer for HBO’s limited series “Sharp Objects,” starring Amy Adams, will make you think it’s Halloween. How can you not when the voiceover is: “Ma says she saw a ghost once. I’m not scared of them ghosts. Are you?”
Based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, the eight-episode series stars Adams — in her first TV role since she recurred on “The Office” 11 years ago — as Camille Preaker, a journalist, recently released from a psychiatric hospital, who returns home to Wind Gap, Missouri, to investigate the murders of two young girls. The haunting trailer doesn’t give too much away, but the investigation leads to troubling secrets of Camille’s past being revealed, as she deals with her difficult mother (Patricia Clarkson) and half-sister Amma (Eliza Scanlen), who provides the aforementioned voiceover.
The series also stars Elizabeth Perkins, Madison Davenport and Chris Messina (yes, it’s a “Julie & Julia” reunion!). “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “UnREAL”’s Marti Noxon adapted the novel, with “Big Little Lies” helmer Jean-Marc Vallee directing all eight episodes. Vallee’s trademark elliptical style is all over this, but instead of the crashing waves and beachfront views of Monterey, we get the dark woods and tarantulas of Wind Gap this time.
“Sharp Objects” premieres on HBO in July, which means it won’t be eligible at the Emmys until next year.
