Dick Clark Productions and NBC announced two more performers who will take the stage at this weekend’s Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, May 20. Shawn Mendes and Khalid will duet on the world television premiere of their collaboration, “Youth,” following Mendes’s solo performance of his current song “In My Blood.” Are you excited to see them take the stage?
In addition to performing at the Billboard Awards, Khalid has five nominations at the event: Top New Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Male Artist, Top R&B Song (“Young, Dumb and Broke”) and Top R&B Album (“American Teen”). He should be considered a strong contender for the New Artist prize since he ranked second on Billboard’s list of the top new artists of 2017, but Cardi B and Camila Cabello are the artists to beat in that race according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users.
“American Teen” was a top-10 hit on the Billboard 200 albums chart when it was released in March 2017. And “Young, Dumb and Broke” peaked at number-18 on the Hot 100 singles chart. But his biggest success of the year was arguably “1-800-273-8255,” his collaboration with Logic and Alessia Cara, which reached number-three on the Hot 100, was certified quadruple-platinum and earned him a Grammy nom for Song of the Year.
Mendes isn’t nominated for any Billboard Awards this year, but in 2017 he contended three times: Top New Artist, Top Male Artist and Top Social Artist. Though he’s only 19-years-old he has already released two number-one, platinum albums with a third to be released on May 25, five days after this year’s awards. Over the course of his career thus far he has also had three top-10, multi-platinum hit singles: “Stitches” (2015), “Treat You Better” (2016) and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” (2017). His latest, “In My Blood” has peaked at number-22 as of this writing, but it could get a big boost following his performance on Sunday night.
Previously announced performers at the Billboard Awards include BTS, Camila Cabello, Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, John Legend, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez, and Ed Sheeran, Christina Aguilera featuring Demi Lovato, Macklemore with Kesha, Salt-N-Pepa featuring En Vogue, and Zedd with Maren Morris and Grey. Which performance are you looking forward to the most this weekend?
