Simon Cowell presses ‘America’s Got Talent’ Golden Buzzer for father of six Michael Ketterer [WATCH]

Michael Ketterer may have been the last act to perform on the June 5 episode of “America’s Got Talent” but he was the first (and only) one to get the golden buzzer, which sent him straight through to the live shows. Before singing the Bee Gees classic “To Love Somebody,” this pediatric mental health nurse told his touching story of being a father to six children, five of whom were in foster care. (Watch his audition video above.)

After Ketterer finished his performance, head judge Simon Cowell, whose crusty exterior hides a surprisingly soft heart, leapt to his feet to press the golden buzzer. After the hubbub died down, he explained his decision thus: “For me, it’s just about being real and a surprise. Because you were so nervous, I was concerned for you.”

The other judges were equally enthusiastic. Howie Mandel confessed, “I just want to be a fraction of the human being that you are.” And, he added, “You’re a great performer and a  star human being.” Mel B thanked him for coming to audition while Heidi Klum readily admitted, “I am just blown away.”

In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty observed, “Michael Ketterer battled his nerves to sing a gorgeous rendition of “To Love Somebody.” The song was an emotional cap to his remarkable story about his family. Howie called him a star, Mel called him an incredible singer and Simon called him a surprise considering how nervous he was. But the real surprise was when Simon stood up to hit his golden buzzer for Michael, making him the second act of season 13 to go straight through to the live shows!”
