“America’s Got Talent” judge Simon Cowell earned boos this week when he said that Us the Duo‘s performance in the “America’s Got Talent” Semifinals 1 episode was just “background noise.” Despite Simon’s critique, Us the Duo’s original song titled “Broke” will no doubt connect with viewers at home as it talks about the everyday struggles of paying bills. Watch the “Americas Got Talent” video above, read the judges’ comments below, and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s results show.

That’s true. I’ve learned that. Guys, you are probably the nicest, sweetest people we’ve ever had on any of these shows. There’s nothing to dislike about you. I guess you never argue. It was like an egg commercial I watched where everyone was happy, eating eggs, whatever. However, I didn’t love the song tonight though, guys, I’m gonna be honest with you. I think it was more of a background noise song compared to what you did before. I thought the song in the VT was actually better than the song you sang. I hope America get behind you so you can come back into the Finals and show us what you’re capable of, because you are great people.”
Heidi Klum: “You know I love you guys and you do sing so beautifully together. But I agree with Simon, it was also not one of my favorite songs. But let’s see what America thinks.”
Howie Mandel: “You know, you are stuck with the dynamics. Like before you, you had the dancers and they went crazy and brought everybody to their feet. You have to come to that and I don’t know that a song about paying bills rises to the occasion of 10 guys in high heels flipping upside-down. So that’s just about timing and where you are. We love you, you’re good. You know, I spoke to you about originals versus getting people to vote. It’s a nice original. It doesn’t move me as much as your baby.”
Mel B: “You know what I love about you guys? You have your own unique sound. I want to be able to turn on the radio and go, ‘Oh my God, that is them.’ That is original and that’s you two. So I really hope America votes for both of you. I actually really like the song.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “For their second live performance this season Us the Duo sang another original song. This week the song was more upbeat than what they’ve done in the past, allowing us to see a new facet of what kind of album they will make after the show. Tonight Simon and Heidi didn’t like the song (he even called it ‘background noise’) while Howie pointed out that they were at a disadvantage coming after the high energy of the guys dancing and it could hurt them in the voting.”
