Slavik got emotional on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’: ‘I’ve been waiting for a piece like this the whole season’ [WATCH]

“The hardest part of this dance is to not get too carried away because I feel like this piece is so emotional I could get really lost in it,” confessed Slavik Pustovoytov about the contemporary dance he performed with all-star Melanie Moore on Top 4 night on “So You Think You Can Dance.” But despite the challenges the routine posed — or perhaps because of them — he felt like he’d “been waiting for a piece like this the whole season.” Watch his performance above.

Two-time Emmy winner Travis Wall choreographed the routine, and Wall has been known to get his dancers to dig deep emotionally. “The story of this piece is this relationship finally getting to a place where they are going to reveal the truth to each other,” Wall explained, “and it’s just this progression until finally they both break.”

Pustovoytov could probably relate to a character who had reached his breaking point. He reached the Top 4 despite getting some of the roughest critiques of the season during Top 6 night. Did he really deserve to be the last man standing after the eliminations of Jay Jay Dixonbey and Darius Hickman? After this cathartic performance Nigel Lythgoe assured him, “You are totally deserving of being here in this competition. I’m very proud of how you’ve developed … Travis didn’t challenge you dance-wise in this beautiful routine. He challenged you emotionally … You came through with flying colors.”

After getting a round of positive comments from the rest of the judges Pustovoytov told host Cat Deeley why this routine meant so much to him. “Ever since the Academy when we did that contemporary round I felt something that I never felt before, especially doing something outside of my style,” he said, “so I wanted to take that to a whole new level. Especially with everything that happened last week, I just wanted to take all that energy and put it into not only this dance but every dance this night.”
