‘SNL,’ ‘This is Us’ and ‘Will and Grace’ will lead an Emmy nominations stampede for NBC, according to our predictions

In recent years the broadcast networks have lost ground at the Emmys as cable and streaming programs have moved to the forefront. But we might see a reversal of fortunes when nominations are announced on Thursday, July 12. According to our predictions in 24 top categories, NBC is expected to clean up thanks to “Saturday Night Live,” “This is Us” and “Will and Grace.” Scroll down to see our predictions by show for each program we’re predicting will be nominated for Best Comedy Series, Best Drama Series, Best Limited Series and Best TV Movie. Projected winners are highlighted in gold.

Our racetrack odds are based on the combined predictions of over 3,000 Gold Derby users, and while “Atlanta” is the narrow favorite to win Best Comedy Series, the sketch comedy “SNL” will win the lion’s share of acting prizes. In fact, we’re predicting more acting nominations for it than for any other comedy (seven). Of those we think it will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress (Kate McKinnon), Best Comedy Guest Actress (Tina Fey) and Best Comedy Guest Actor (Bill Hader). Last year it actually made history as the first comedy ever to win four acting awards in the same year.

“Will and Grace” won’t be too far behind. We’re predicting six acting noms for the revival in addition to a bid for Best Comedy Series. All four of the show’s regular cast members won Emmys during the show’s original run from 1998-2006, but only one of them is tipped to win this year: Sean Hayes for Best Comedy Supporting Actor, which he last claimed way back in 2000.

Meanwhile, “This is Us” is expected to be the top drama in acting categories with a predicted seven noms, including first-time bids for Mandy Moore (Best Drama Actress) and Justin Hartley (Best Drama Supporting Actor). We’re betting that it will come away with repeat wins for Best Drama Actor (Sterling K. Brown) and Best Drama Guest Actor (Gerald McRaney).

Of course, our predictions don’t include writing, directing, or Creative Arts categories where cable and streaming shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Westworld,” “Stranger Things” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” are likely to rack up lots of nominations. So these predictions don’t tell the whole story, but they do indicate that reports of network TV’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Check out our predictions by show below. And there’s still time to make or update your own picks right here before Thursday’s announcement of the nominees.
