During the first live show of “So You Think You Can Dance” season 15, the top 10 dancers paired off to perform not one but two routines in each of their signature styles. So when contemporary specialist Darius Hickman and Latin ballroom dancer Magda Fialek teamed up their first challenge was a Travis Wall contemporary routine that was right in Hickman’s wheelhouse, but out of Fialek’s comfort zone.
Or so you’d think. Fialek looked like she was born to be a contemporary dancer alongside Hickson. Judge Nigel Lythgoe thought it was a “SYTYCD” routine for the ages, and guest judge Twitch thought the choreography was so good that Wall was already setting the stage for another Emmy nomination in 2019. Watch their performance above, and read what the judges had to say below.
Twitch: “Travis, you’re already nominated for an Emmy, but I feel like you’re setting the mark for next year already. That was crazy. That was an amazing display from the both of you. Darius, you were so strong. And Magda, you executed this level of submission and surrender that is usually so different from when you take the floor doing ballroom, so that exchange that you had in the partnership is something that is ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ so congratulations. Excellent job.”
Mary Murphy: “This routine by Travis made you two very dangerous dancers for everybody else to go up against. Darius, you were so strong, your intention is always right on point … You never let it down. You dominated this. And Magda, you were right in there with him every step of the way. You looked like a beautiful contemporary dancer tonight. I would have never known you were a ballroom dancer just now. Spectacular.”
Nigel Lythgoe: “It’s a question of mathematics to be honest with you. Philip Glass, genius. Plus Debbie Harry, genius. Plus Travis Wall, genius. Two brilliant dancers in a genius routine, and you have got a routine that we will talk about on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ for many, many seasons.”
Vanessa Hudgens: “To be honest, I’m kind of speechless, I really am. That was so moving, both of you. You both blew me away. Not a single weak moment, just stunning.”
