‘So You Think You Can Dance’ reigning champ Lex helped Genessy get her groove back with this routine [WATCH]

Genessy Castillo has struggled with her confidence periodically on “So You Think You Can Dance.” During Academy Week she admitted to self-doubt because she didn’t have the otherworldly flexibility of some of her rival contestants. And in last week’s show she landed in the bottom four when the results of America’s vote were announced. But this past Monday night, when the Top 6 contestants performed for the 4 spots in the finale, the show gave her a big vote of confidence by pairing her with reigning “SYTYCD” champion Lex Ishimoto.

All six contestants got to perform with an all-star, and every all-star featured in this week’s show had made the top four in their respective seasons. But even by those high standards Castillo got the cream of the crop for her dance choreographed by Mandy Korpinen and Elizabeth Petrin. Castillo and Ishimoto performed with their faces covered by masks, and the judges thought it brought out the best in her.

“I really liked the idea of getting rid of the facade that we all carry every day,” said judge Nigel Lythgoe about the concept of the dance, and he assured Castillo that she has “exceeded” their expectations. “You have been remarkable on this show.” Vanessa Hudgens noted that covering Castillo’s face forced her to emote even more with her body, and her execution was “beautiful … and took my breath away.” Twitch could also feel Castillo’s “intention” through her body, and he encouraged her to carry that with her throughout the competition.

By the end of the night, host Cat Deeley had announced three of the four contestants who had made the finals: Jensen Arnold, Hannahlei Cabanilla and Slavik Pustovoytov. So Castillo was left in suspense with Jay Jay Dixonbey and Darius Hickman to find out who would get the last slot. From the look on her face she seemed to be expecting bad news, so her joy at making it to the finale was so infectious that it took a moment for the disappointment to sink in that the equally stellar Dixonbey and Hickman were both going home.
