“So You Think You Can Dance” season 15 starts its live shows tonight, August 6, with its top 10 contestants performing for America’s vote. But America has already voted for their favorites in our informal polls, and based on those results it looks like Jensen Arnold and Evan DeBenedetto are the ones to beat. Scroll down for our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
Latin ballroom specialist Arnold wowed the judges when she took on an unfamiliar jazz routine in the last round of judges’ cuts when the top 10 women were whittled down to 5. And she comes from a formidable family of dance. Her big sister Lindsay Arnold competed in season nine of “SYTYCD” and became a Mirror Ball Trophy winner on “Dancing with the Stars.” And their little sister Rylee Arnold will be a pro dancer on “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors.”
A leading 40% of our readers are rooting for Arnold the most among the five female contestants. She’s followed by Hannahlei Cabanilla (27%), Magda Fialek and Chelsea Hough (12% each) and Genessy Castillo (9%).
Tap dancer DeBenedetto is our readers’ favorite male contestant with roughly a third of the vote (34%) in a divided field. The judges were impressed with his contemporary routine during the last cut for the men, but will a tapper be able to adapt to the wide variety of dance styles that he’ll be faced with during the live shows? Well, there’s certainly precedent for it: tap dancer Gaby Diaz made history in season 12 as the first dancer from that discipline to win the show. But there has yet to be a male tapper to pull it off.
Following DeBenedetto in our poll were Cole Mills (24%), Darius Hickman (20%), Jay Jay Dixonbey (13%) and Slavik Pustovoytov (9%). There’s not a lot of distance between the top three vote-getters in our poll, so standout performances during the live shows could certainly swing the momentum one way or another.
