“So You Think You Can Dance” just ended its 15th season (SPOILERS AHEAD, so read no further if you haven’t seen tonight’s show). At the end of the night, in what host Cat Deeley described as the closest vote between first and second place in the show’s history, Hannahlei Cabanilla eked out a win over Jensen Arnold. Genessy Castillo finished third. And Slavik Pustovoytov finished fourth. Now that the season is over and Cabanilla joins the storied history of “SYTYCD” champs, where do you think she ranks in the history of the show? Check out the full list of winners in the gallery above. And vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Judging from the show’s history, we probably should have seen this coming. Cabanilla is a contemporary dancer, and contemporary dancers tend to win. In fact, she’s the eighth champ in the show’s history with a contemporary background, following Nick Lazzarini (season 1), Sabra Johnson (season 3), Jeanine Mason (season 5), Lauren Froderman (season 7), Melanie Moore (season 8), Ricky Ubeda (season 11) and last year’s champ Lex Ishimoto (season 14). Arnold was a Latin ballroom dancer, and she would have been the first Latin ballroom champ in the show’s history.
Hip-hop has also been well established on the show. Joshua Allen (season 4), Russell Ferguson (season 6), Fik-Shun (season 10), Leon “Kida” Burns (season 13) and the aforementioned Ishimoto (whose background is hip-hop and contemporary) won the show representing urban dance styles. And of course one of the show’s most famous alums, Twitch (who joined season 15 as a judge), is also a hip-hop dancer. The only hip-hop dancer who made the top 10 this season was Pustovoytov, and he made it farther than any other man in the competition.
So do you think Cabanilla is the best of all time? Vote below to let us know.
