“Survivor: David vs. Goliath” doesn’t debut until this fall on CBS, but fans are already getting excited for Season 37’s two celebrity castaways: filmmaker Mike White and pro wrestler John Hennigan. Per The Hollywood Reporter, they will be the only two celebs to appear so don’t look for “Survivor” 37 to be a “Celebrity” version of the show. Read on for more spoilers about these two famous castaways.
Reality TV fans will recognize White from his two seasons on “The Amazing Race” alongside his father. In Season 14 they came in sixth place, being eliminated in Phuket, Thailand. And in Season 18 the son-father duo was the second team sent home after a fateful leg in Tokyo, Japan. White is also a filmmaker and an actor. He notably starred alongside Laura Dern in HBO’s “Enlightened,” a show they co-created together. Though it only lasted two seasons, “Enlightened” had a passionate cult following and even won a Golden Globe for Dern as Best TV Comedy Actress.
“I’ve been watching since the first episode, and after a while, you’re tired of watching it; you want to go and do it,” White said last March before his “Survivor” journey started filming. “This is everything to me. It’s a huge adventure. It’s a little absurd. At least I’m not stuck on the 405!”
Well-known professional wrestler Hennigan, aka “The Mayor of Slamtown,” aka “Johnny Nitro,” was looking inward before the season began. “This island is really about me versus me,” he revealed. “That’s what defines ‘Survivor.’ It’s the ultimate test of who you are.”
Like White, Hennigan is no stranger to reality TV, having won “Tough Enough III” in 2002 that earned him the prize of a WWE contract. Over the past two decades he was a member of several wrestling organizations, including Ohio Valley Wrestling and MNM, before finally joining the independent circuit in 2012. He’s also an occassional actor who appeared most recenetly in “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming.”
Viewers of the “Survivor: Ghost Island” finale this spring were given a sneak peek of the “David vs. Goliath” twist during the controversial reunion show. Host Jeff Probst revealed that Season 37 will be a biblical battle between a tribe of disadvantaged people (Davids) facing off against a tribe of folks with inherent advantages (Goliaths). Six new castaways are introduced in the preview trailer, including Nick, Gabby and Christian from the David tribe and Angelina, John and Natalie from the Goliath tribe.
Here’s how Probst describes “Survivor: David vs. Goliath”: “‘Survivor’ [is] a game of social politics that often centers around the story of the underdog versus the favorite. And this time we’re hitting it head on. The Davids — 10 strangers who share one thing in common: overcoming adversity. It’s the only thing they’ve known. They’ll take on the Goliaths — 10 strangers who also share one thing in common: capitalizing on their advantage and using it to squash their opponents. But when you’re abandoned on a deserted island with no idea what to expect, it doesn’t matter if you were born with it or had to fight for it. Because every Goliath has an Achilles heel. And every David, a secret weapon.”
