According to the predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users, “A Quiet Place” will win the Teen Choice Award for Choice Drama Movie, but might we be underestimating “The Greatest Showman”? In addition to being a huge hit with a wildly popular soundtrack, it boasts two Teen Choice favorites who could propel the film into the winner’s circle: Zac Efron and Zendaya.
To date Efron has won 11 Teen Choice Awards. In 2006 he claimed Choice TV Breakout and Choice TV Chemistry (with Vanessa Hudgens) for “High School Musical.” Then in 2007 he was the Choice Male Hottie. He followed that in 2009 with a trio of awards: Choice Comedy Movie Actor and Choice Movie Rockstar Moment for “17 Again,” and Choice Music/Dance Movie Actor for “High School Musical 3.”
In 2011 he was the Choice Male Red Carpet Fashion Icon. In 2012 he was both the Choice Drama Movie Actor and the Choice Romance Movie Actor for “The Lucky One.” And most recently he won Choice Comedy Movie Actor twice in a row, for “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” (2016) and “Baywatch” (2017). This year alone he’s up for a whopping five awards. For “Showman” he contends for Choice Drama Movie Actor, Choice Movie Ship (with Zendaya), Choice Liplock (with Zendaya) and Choice Collaboration (“Rewrite the Stars” with Zendaya). And on his own he contends once again for Choice Male Hottie.
Thus far Zendaya has won three times: Choice Style Icon in 2014 and 2016, and Choice Summer Movie Actress for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” in 2017. But with more than a dozen awards combined, she and Efron should be a force to be reckoned with this year. And since popularity counts at these fan-voted awards, let’s not forget that “The Greatest Showman” was a sleeper hit, grossing more than $400 million worldwide. And its soundtrack album topped the Billboard 200 albums chart and has gone platinum, an impressive achievement for a soundtrack these days.
As of this writing “The Greatest Showman” ranks second in our users’ predictions with 23/10 odds, not too far behind “A Quiet Place” with leading odds of 5/6. Do you agree with our consensus that “Quiet Place” will scare up the most teens’ votes, or will “Showman” have a stronger showing?
