“The Americans” signed off on May 30 after six seasons of critically acclaimed drama following the lives of Philip and Elizabeth Jennings (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell), deep-cover KGB agents conspiring against the United States in the last years of the Cold War. The finale episode, “START,” brought much of the story full-circle while leaving tantalizing questions about the fates of other characters. Our forum posters were “in awe” of the episode, and our readers who responded to our poll overwhelmingly thought the finale was “brilliant” and deserves “Emmys all around!” Scroll down for the complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
More than three-quarters of our readers (76%) think the episode deserves to win Emmys. Another 17% feel it was good enough for nominations, but not wins. Only 7% think the episode deserved no Emmys at all. Many of our readers may get their wish judging from recent history, at least in the race for Best Drama Writing. “The Americans” scribes have been nominated for the last three years in a row, for the episodes “Do Mail Robots Dream of Electric Sheep” (2015), “Persona Non Grata” (2016) and “The Soviet Division” (2017).
“The Americans” also earned a Best Drama Series nomination in 2016 and lead-acting nominations for Rhys and Russell in 2016 and 2017. But to date the show has only won two Emmys, both for guest actress Margo Martindale as sinister KGB handler Claudia (2015-2016). And if nominated, the show’s stars and writers could come away with Emmys this September if “Friday Night Lights” is any indication. That show was slow to catch on with Emmy voters too, but it won Best Drama Actor (Kyle Chandler) and Best Drama Writing in 2011 for its final season.

Hunter-ish: “Awesome finale. I really liked how they stayed true to the show by not tying everything up for an explosive ending but touching on points just enough and then letting them sit for powerful emotional moments.”
danny133: “Wow! This finale was incredible. It was so true to the show, down to the music montages. The scene in the garage is hands-down the best thing I have seen on TV this year.”
Denis: “This was absolutely terrific, the garage scene, when Philip started to talk about Henry, his acting is a masterpiece, Russel is mesmerizing, Emmerich too, what a fantastic show, those tense moments on the train and at the border were the best things I have ever seen … I am in awe.”
probablyROB: “I thought that was a near perfect finale and one of the best series finales since Justified. Rhys and Emmerich gave Emmy worthy performances and Keri Russell was fantastic.”
