ABC just released our first look at “The Conners,” which will continue the story from “Roseanne” without its title character. The rest of the cast came together for the first table read. Leading the show will be patriarch Dan Conner, played by John Goodman. As you can see in the photo above, he is surrounded by the three Conner children (Michael Fishman, Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson) and three grandchildren (Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara and Jayden Rey). Also on hand is Laurie Metcalf as sister-in-law Jackie Harris.
Metcalf is currently in contention at the upcoming Emmys for her scene-stealing turn. After the stunning cancellation of “Roseanne” on May 29 in the wake of Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweets, we had written off the rest of the cast as Emmy contenders. But with five days left in voting came the news that the show would return, and that was just the boost that Metcalf needed to revive her Emmy chances.
We’ve already seen the Broadway community rally around Metcalf, who pulled off a stunning upset at the recent Tony Awards. She won the featured actress trophy for her work in “Three Tall Women” over Denise Gough, who was riveting in the epic revival of “Angels in America.” Metcalf is equally beloved by the TV academy, racking up three consecutive wins for her role as the tart-tongued Jackie during the original run of “Roseanne” beginning in 1992. She has reaped seven more Emmy bids since, including an unprecedented three in one year.
