Could ‘The Crown’ snatch ‘The Handmaid’s Tale”s Emmy crown?

“The Handmaid’s Tale”’s reign as the Emmys’ Best Drama Series might be short-lived, but the show that could dethrone it might not be the one you expect. While the majority of our Experts are still predicting the Hulu drama to defend its title, Robert Rorke (New York Post) is forecasting a win for “The Crown.”

A nominee last year, “The Crown” is still just fifth in our overall odds, behind “Handmaid’s” — the choice of 10 Experts — two-time champ “Game of Thrones,” which has four backers, “This Is Us” and “Stranger Things.” “Westworld” is in sixth. No Expert is picking a win for any of the latter three.

SEE ‘The Crown’ producers apologize to Claire Foy, Matt Smith for pay disparity reveal

A victory for “The Crown” would be a bit of surprise since its buzz is far more muted than that of its rivals. And it self-generated the “wrong” kind of press earlier this spring when producers revealed that Matt Smith was paid more than leading lady Claire Foy before vowing to ensure equal pay for future seasons. But Season 2 was the final season for Foy, as Olivia Colman is taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth when the show jumps in time in Season 3. Foy, however, reportedly received back pay. The controversy will likely engender more sympathy for Foy than the show itself, but if voters want to honor the first two seasons, they could very well check off the series.

If “The Crown” manages to win Best Drama Series, it will be a big coup for Netflix, which had to watch Hulu become the first streaming service to win the top series prize on its first try last year.
